For patients who experience meaningful, sustained pain relief during a spinal cord stimulator trial, permanent implantation offers an ongoing, adjustable therapy for chronic back, leg or other nerve-related pain. Rather than repeat medication or injections indefinitely, an implanted system delivers continuous, programmable stimulation that can be fine-tuned to your pain pattern and lifestyle over the years ahead.

The implant procedure is performed under sedation or general anaesthetic, usually in an operating theatre setting. The same style of leads used in your trial are placed in the epidural space and connected to a small pulse generator (the device's battery and electronics), which is implanted just under the skin, typically in the buttock, flank or lower abdomen, so that nothing is visible or requires external wiring.

Once healed, the system is programmed to your individual pain pattern and can be adjusted at follow-up visits or, with many modern devices, by the patient at home using a handheld or app-based controller.
