Occipital Nerves Block

The greater and lesser occipital nerves, and in some cases the third occipital nerve, carry sensation from the back of the scalp and upper neck. An occipital nerve block may be considered for occipital neuralgia, cervicogenic headache and selected headache disorders when pain remains troublesome despite other treatments.

The relevant nerve is located with anatomical landmarks and, where appropriate, ultrasound guidance. A small amount of local anaesthetic, sometimes combined with a corticosteroid, is injected around the nerve rather than into the nerve itself. The procedure is designed to temporarily reduce pain signalling from the treated area.

Some patients experience rapid but temporary relief, while others may have improvement lasting longer as irritation around the nerve settles. The response can also help clarify the contribution of the occipital nerves to the headache or scalp pain.
