Lignocaine Infusion
|
Intravenous lignocaine (lidocaine) infusion is a treatment option for certain chronic neuropathic pain conditions that have not responded adequately to standard oral medications. Given slowly under close monitoring, lignocaine — more commonly known as a local anaesthetic used for numbing — can, at carefully controlled intravenous doses, reduce abnormal nerve signalling that drives chronic neuropathic pain. The infusion is delivered over a period of time in a setting equipped for continuous cardiac and blood pressure monitoring, since lignocaine affects the heart's electrical activity at higher doses. Dr Danesh and the treating team carefully calculate and titrate the dose based on your body weight and response, watching closely for any early signs that the dose needs to be adjusted. For appropriately selected patients, lignocaine infusion can provide a period of worthwhile pain relief, and the response to an infusion can also help guide whether other lignocaine-related treatments (such as an oral analogue) may be useful going forward. Dr Danesh will discuss whether this treatment suits your specific condition and the monitoring involved. |
