Genicular nerve block

The genicular nerves are small sensory branches that carry pain signals from the knee joint. A genicular nerve block may be considered for persistent knee pain, particularly osteoarthritis-related pain, when the knee remains painful despite conservative treatment or when joint replacement is not currently appropriate.

Using X-ray or ultrasound guidance, a fine needle is positioned beside selected genicular nerves and a small amount of local anaesthetic is injected. The procedure does not alter the structure of the knee joint. The nerves selected depend on the location of your pain and the anatomy seen on imaging.

The block is primarily used to assess whether the genicular nerves are contributing to your pain and may provide temporary relief. A clear response can support consideration of genicular nerve radiofrequency neurotomy for selected patients seeking longer-lasting pain reduction.
