Dorsal Root Ganglion Block

The dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is a small cluster of nerve cells located just outside the spinal canal where sensory information from a particular area of the body enters the nervous system. A DRG block may be considered when a specific nerve root or sensory distribution is suspected to be responsible for persistent radicular or neuropathic pain.

Under X-ray guidance, a fine needle is positioned close to the selected dorsal root ganglion and a small amount of local anaesthetic is injected. Contrast may be used to confirm the needle position and ensure the medication is delivered to the intended area. Because the DRG lies close to the spinal nerve root, precise image-guided technique is particularly important.

The block can provide temporary pain relief and useful diagnostic information about the contribution of the targeted sensory nerve. A clear but temporary response may support consideration of pulsed radiofrequency or other targeted treatments in selected patients.
