Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection

A caudal epidural steroid injection delivers anti-inflammatory medication directly into the lower epidural space via the sacral hiatus, a small natural opening near the tailbone. It is a well-established option for lower back and leg pain arising from irritated or inflamed nerve roots in the lower lumbar and sacral spine, such as from a disc bulge, disc herniation or spinal stenosis.

Performed under X-ray guidance to confirm accurate placement, the injection combines a local anaesthetic with a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation around the affected nerve roots and disc material, easing the pain and irritation that drives symptoms such as sciatica. Because the caudal approach enters below the spinal cord itself, it is often favoured for patients who have had previous lower back surgery or where a more direct approach may be technically difficult.

Most patients experience some easing of pain within days to a couple of weeks, providing a valuable window to progress more comfortably with physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
