Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection

A cervical epidural steroid injection (CESI) delivers anti-inflammatory medication into the epidural space of the neck, and is used for chronic neck pain and pain radiating into the arm caused by irritated cervical nerve roots — for example from a cervical disc bulge, herniation or foraminal narrowing. Because of the more delicate anatomy of the neck, this procedure requires particular precision and is performed with meticulous X-ray guidance throughout.

The injection combines local anaesthetic and corticosteroid, delivered through a midline approach between the cervical vertebrae, with contrast dye used to confirm exact needle placement before any medication is given. This careful technique aims to reduce inflammation around the affected nerve roots, easing both neck pain and any pain, numbness or tingling radiating into the arm or hand.

For appropriately selected patients, worthwhile relief within one to two weeks is common, supporting a more comfortable return to physiotherapy, posture correction and daily activity.
