Ankle Nerves Pulsed Radiofrequency and Block

Pulsed radiofrequency can be considered for persistent ankle or foot pain when a particular peripheral nerve has been identified as a significant pain generator and a diagnostic block has produced meaningful but temporary relief. Depending on the pain distribution, the treatment may target the tibial, sural, superficial peroneal, deep peroneal or saphenous nerve.

Under ultrasound guidance, a specialised needle is placed adjacent to the selected nerve. After appropriate sensory and motor testing, controlled pulses of radiofrequency energy are delivered around the nerve. The aim is to modulate abnormal pain signalling without the sustained heat and nerve destruction associated with thermal radiofrequency ablation.

The response to treatment varies and may take some time to become apparent. When successful, PRF may provide a longer period of pain reduction and make walking, rehabilitation and daily activities easier. Dr Danesh will discuss the expected benefits, limitations and whether repeat treatment is appropriate if the initial response is helpful.
