Ankle Nerves Block

Several nerves contribute to sensation around the ankle and foot, including the tibial, sural, superficial peroneal, deep peroneal and saphenous nerves. A targeted ankle nerve block may be considered when pain is localised to a particular nerve distribution, including selected neuropathic pain conditions, post-traumatic pain or pain following surgery.

Depending on the location and pattern of pain, one or more nerves can be identified using ultrasound guidance and surrounded with a small amount of local anaesthetic. The procedure is performed around the nerve rather than directly into it. Image guidance helps identify the nerve, blood vessels and other nearby structures and allows the injection to be placed accurately.

The block can provide temporary pain relief and help determine whether the targeted nerve is contributing to your symptoms. The response may guide further treatment, including pulsed radiofrequency for selected patients with persistent pain. Dr Danesh will tailor the nerves treated to your individual pain distribution and clinical findings.
