Ilioinguinal Nerve, Iliohypogastric Nerve, Genitofemoral Nerve Pulsed Radiofrequency and Block

Pulsed radiofrequency of the ilioinguinal, iliohypogastric and/or genitofemoral nerves may be considered for persistent groin or lower abdominal neuropathic pain when a diagnostic nerve block has provided meaningful but temporary relief. These nerves can become painful or hypersensitive after surgery, hernia repair, trauma or other local injury.

Under ultrasound guidance, the affected nerve is identified and a specialised needle is positioned adjacent to it. Local anaesthetic may be used as part of the procedure, followed by carefully controlled pulsed radiofrequency energy. PRF delivers short electrical pulses rather than the continuous heat used for thermal nerve ablation, with the intention of modulating abnormal pain signalling.

Some patients experience a useful period of reduced pain after PRF, although the response is variable and cannot be guaranteed. The treatment is intended to support recovery of function and participation in rehabilitation rather than simply mask symptoms. Dr Danesh will review your response to previous blocks and your individual pain pattern before considering repeat treatment.
